Jonathan Chen Named FACL’s Mentor of the Year
Jonathan Chen was recognized at the 17th Annual FACL Gala on Saturday, March 2 for his demonstrated positive impact on the professional development and career trajectory of members of the legal community, and particularly the Asian community, through mentorship.
“Jonathan is paving the way forward for young diverse lawyers through his exceptional advocacy, leadership in advancing our firm and the legal industry, commitment to EDI and innovation, and especially, his dedication to teaching and mentorship,” says Managing Partner, Monique Jilesen. “We are pleased that the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers has chosen to recognize Jonathan for his commitment to training the next generation of leading litigators inside and outside our firm.”
Jonathan Chen is a Partner at Lenczner Slaght and a first generation Asian-Canadian lawyer. In addition to his successful litigation practice in complex commercial disputes, class actions, product liability, and professional negligence, as well as his internal mentorship activities, Jonathan devotes considerable time training young lawyers even outside the firm. For over 10 years at the University of Toronto’s New College Mentorship Program, Jonathan annually mentored 3-4 students with legal career aspirations, engaging with them on navigating applications, law school, and legal practice. In 2024, he received the Arbor Award for his outstanding contribution. He has also coached Queen’s Law students at the OTLA Trial Moot, guiding them to win multiple team and oralist awards in the last few years. Finally, Jonathan is a dedicated member of FACL, participating as a mentor through various programs organized by the association.
Congratulations, Jonathan, on another well-deserved recognition!
