About

Jacob* is a summer student at Lenczner Slaght. As a student at UNB Law, he has been involved in helping set up the first Legal Innovation Lab in Canada. Before attending law school, Jacob undertook interdisciplinary graduate research in philosophy, history, and literature. His interdisciplinary curiosity creates§ value for clients from diverse backgrounds. Outside of academia, Jacob has volunteered as a firefighter and built an international reputation as an artist-craftsman. His distinct background allows him to build connections by applying a broad, open-minded perspective to specific legal problems. Jacob’s experience as a writer, storyteller, and student of philosophy combined with the hard work and business acumen of a craftsmen give him an unusual set of skills. He is an intellectual eager to get his hands dirty and work as an integral member of a team at the cutting edge of the legal profession. .

Details

Jacob Powning

is a summer student at Lenczner Slaght.

Jacob is entering his third year at the University of New Brunswick, Faculty of Law. While at law school, Jacob has worked as a legal research assistant, assisting in the development of the brand new Legal Innovation Lab at UNB Law. His work with the UNB LIL has allowed him to conduct research and writing on the emerging challenges of regulating generative Artificial Intelligence. 

In addition to working as a legal research assistant, Jacob is actively involved in contributing to the faculty and its community. Most notably, Jacob helped host an Access to Justice Summit at UNB Law, where he interviewed the Chief Justice of New Brunswick. Jacob has also served as a student intern at the New Brunswick Court of Appeal where he wrote memos and helped draft judgements for criminal and labour law appeals. Jacob holds a Lord Beaverbrook Scholarship in Law, the faculty’s most prestigious award. 

Prior to law school, Jacob completed a Master’s in Interdisciplinary Studies in Philosophy, History and Literature. He holds a BA in Philosophy and has travelled and presented at conferences internationally across Europe and North America as an artist-craftsman.
